A liver biopsy is a procedure where a sample of your liver is collected for analysis. When you undergo a percutaneous liver biopsy a needle is inserted into your abdominal wall or within the areas between the lower ribs on the right. It enters the right side because this is the side on which the liver is located. The sample collected from the liver is sent out for testing for a variety of different reasons. Some of them may be to identify an unknown cause, while others could be to assess the level of damage present from fibrosis (or scarring) of the liver. For additional information on this procedure and if it is right for you, contact our GI providers at GI Alliance of Illinois.

There are a variety of reasons why patients in Chicago, IL, Peoria, IL, or Bloomington, IL, may be good candidates for a liver biopsy. A few of those reasons can include the following:

  • Need to know how much damage your liver has sustained from fibrosis
  • It is necessary to help identify the reason for abnormal liver enzymes
  • An abnormality was found on a recent scan (CT or nuclear scan)
  • There’s unexplained enlargement of the liver
  • Determine how well a specific treatment is working
  • To identify the reason for the yellowing of the skin (jaundice)
  • Used to monitor the liver after a transplant

If you believe you’re a good candidate for liver biopsy, contact our team of GI providers at GI Alliance of Illinois. We will walk you through the process and determine if this course of treatment will benefit you. Request an appointment at your earliest convenience.

Once it's determined that a liver biopsy is the correct treatment for your need, we will ask you to follow a few steps before the day of the biopsy in our Illinois office. This includes taking note of all your current medications, the frequency at which you take them, and the amount. You’ll likely be asked to stop certain medications before the procedure, as they may increase the risk of bleeding. Some of these medications include:

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others,) and certain pain relievers
  • Blood-thinning medications like such as warfarin
  • Any specific dietary supplements that may increase the risk of uncontrolled bleeding

You’ll also likely be asked to fast from food and drink for up to eight hours before the liver biopsy. You’ll also have a pre-biopsy blood test to check for your blood’s ability to clot. If blood clotting is determined as a problem, you might be provided medication to fix the issue to reduce the risk of clotting.
