Varices are veins that have become enlarged and swollen. The esophagus is the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. When you have esophageal varices. It means that enlarged veins are occurring on the lining of your esophagus. To learn more about this condition and how to receive the proper treatment, contact our GI providers at GI Alliance of Illinois.

One of the main causes of esophageal varices is the presence of liver disease. When you have liver disease, the liver is unable to properly cleanse toxins from the blood, and the blood flow is blocked by a clot or existing scar tissue.

When the blood flow is blocked, that same blood flows into different, smaller blood vessels. These vessels enlarge, can leak blood, and rupture in severe cases. When it ruptures, it can cause life-threatening bleeding. Request an appointment with our team of GI providers at GI Alliance of Illinois to learn more about this condition, and how we can help you.

Unfortunately, esophageal varices don’t generally cause signs or symptoms unless they’ve started to bleed. The signs and specific symptoms of bleeding esophageal varices include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Vomiting large amounts of blood
  • Black, tarry, or bloody stools
  • Loss of consciousness (severe cases)

If you have liver disease and are dealing with jaundice (yellowing of the skin), you easily bleed or bruise, or you are experiencing fluid buildup in your abdomen, our team may suspect esophageal varices. If you have any of the signs or symptoms, request an appointment with our GI providers at GI Alliance of Illinois.

If you have liver disease, excessive bleeding, lightheadedness, or are vomiting it is important for you to get the appropriate care. Request an appointment with our team and we will help you get on track to a healthier you.
