Gallstones are objects resembling stones that develop in the gallbladder or bile ducts. They are made of cholesterol (a waxy, fat-like substance made in the liver), or bilirubin (a substance formed when red blood cells are broken down). The gallstones can range in size. They can be as small as a tiny grain of sand, or as large as a golf ball. Larger stones generally remain in the gallbladder without causing irritation in the gallbladder. On the other hand, smaller stones cause issues because they can leave the gallbladder and get stuck.
What are the symptoms of gallstones?
You may experience a few uncomfortable symptoms if you have gallstones. Some of these symptoms can include:
- A sudden and rapid intense pain in the center of your abdomen
- A rapid and sudden pain in the upper right of your abdomen
- Pain in your right shoulder
- Nausea or vomiting
- Back pain between your shoulder blades
