Ileitis is the GI problem manifesting in irritation or inflammation of the ileum, the lower part of the small intestine where it meets the large intestine. Signs and symptoms of ileitis can involve the following:

  • Loss of weight
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramping or discomfort in the abdomen, as well as fistulas (atypical tubes that develop between parts of one's intestine)

Ileitis might be caused by a multitude of conditions, Crohn’s disease being the most common. Other precipitating factors may include infections, side effects of ischemia, NSAIDs, and unusual growths. Should you require care for ileitis in Chicago, IL, or Bloomington, IL, assistance is nearby. Receive the care you need by calling a gastroenterology specialist at your area GI Alliance of Illinois location as soon as possible.

Identifying the main cause of ileitis is of the utmost importance to efficiently address this GI concern and to the treatment plan decided by your gastrointestinal provider. Your specialist will review your medical history and conduct an exhaustive physical examination. A series of evaluations could also be ordered to confirm the diagnosis which may include stool analysis, X-rays, barium X-rays of the small intestine, CT scan, colonoscopy (narrow lighted tube is inserted into the anus for a close examination), and biopsy.

If you are concerned that ileitis might be causing you pain, reach out to GI Alliance of Illinois to consult with a GI physician who can provide you with a proper plan for your care.

Following your provider's receipt of the results of the diagnostic exams, ileitis could be treated and managed using medications such as antibiotics, corticosteroids, anti-inflammatories, antidiarrheal and immune-suppressing medications, and dietary supplements to decrease swelling and control related symptoms. Surgical intervention may be considered if symptoms cannot be managed with medications or in the event that complications present. A surgical approach is used to remove a damaged section(s), and/or correct perforations of the intestine or blockages. It is important to incorporate a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, keep a healthy diet and quit or avoid smoking.

Dr. Glaws has cared for me for quite sometime. I appreciate how hard he and his staff and team has worked to ensure I receive the best care! This is a kind compassionate hero in a lab coat. I wouldn’t change one thing about my doctor or the medical care I receive for my GI disorders under his care.

Dr. Bernsen is knowledgeable, kind, concise and reassuring. I chose to go back to him for a second procedure after having a positive experience the first time. He is punctual and considerate of his patients’ time and needs. I highly recommend this doctor!

I went to the Illinois Gastrenterology for the first time to have my COLONOSCOPY. I have been seening Dr. Greenberg since probably the early 1990's. I have had him do my COLONOSCOPIES at St. ALLEXIUS hospital in Hoffman ESTATES since I live in Streamwood. This time his office suggested that I have my test done at their office in Arlington Heights. It truly was a pleasure doing my procedure at the Illinois Gastro office rather than the hospital. It was so much easier 1 to find a parking spot 2 the staff at Illinois Gastro is very kind and very hard working and they get you prepped really fast and the anesthesiologist is supper kind and she gave me just enough of the sleeping stuff that I woke up quicker and I never woke up during the procedure. Well, I can't say enough about Dr. GREENBERG because he is a very nice person and his bedside manners are fantastic. He explains everything before your procedure and after your procedure when he gives you your results. So like I said the Illinois Gastro CENTER is so much better and easier to go to and they work quicker and Dr. GREENBERG is awesome he has been my gastro doctor for way over 20 plus years. Along with every thing I have said about Illinois Gastro CENTER and Dr GREENBERG also he is my wifes Gastro Doctor as well. My wife explains Doctor GREENBERG as very gentle with his bedside manners as well as she will now get her procedure done at Illinois Gastro office also. The Center is so much better to go to than the hospital. Don't hesitate to try it you won't be disappointed at all. I give them 5 STARS. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WONDERFUL SERVICE INCLUDING DR. GREENBERG. 👍
